Abstract
This paper present the wave climate characteristics around the Japanese
coast estimated from the statistical analysis for the long-term wave data
observed at 11 coastal stations by the Japan Meteorological Agency. The
wave data processed by the Port and Harbor Research Institute, Ministry
of Transport are added to a portion of wave statistics. The wave statistics
obtained from the analysis are monthly, seasonal, and yearly means of
significant waves, their statistical distributions, sea state persistency,
spectral characteristics and long period trend of time series for significant
wave height and the maximum significant waves classified by the pattern
of meteorological disturbances. Moreover, it is shown that the wave statistics
estimated from visual wave observations are less reliable in a quantitative
sense than those from instrumental wave observations.
