Abstract
By using worldwide statistics on number of death and missing caused by flood and windstorm disasters, damage trends of the catastrophic disasters in the 20th century are examined, and all of these disasters in the 1980s are compared among 6 continents and 14 Asian countries. Although the catastrophic events of more than 0.1 million human losses such as those before the 1970s have not occurred in the 1980s, about 10 thousand people have been killed every year, and the death toll is increasing from the beginning to the end of the 80s. About 80 percent of these disasters occurred in Asia; Bangladesh, India and China are the most vulnerable countries which have lost more than 1,000 persons per year.
