Abstract
In 1994, severe agricultural damage occured in the western part of Japan, which was caused by extreme little rainfall and high temperature in summer. The total amount of precipitation in July was less than 80mm in the north-western part of Yamaguchi prefecture and that in August was less than 40mm in the whole Yamaguchi prefecture. We investigated damage of paddy rice plants caused by drought at Yuya town in Yamaguchi prefecture and at Matsuura district in Nagasaki prefecture. Main irrigation systems for paddy fields in Mukatsuku peninsula, hilly and mountainous areas depend on irrigation pond, subterranean water and spring water. Rice yield was influenced the position of irrigation pond that were greatly decreased because of insufficient water supply. In 1994 the agricultural damages by drought exceeded 140 billion yen in Japan.
