Abstract
Japan Meteorological Agency announces, in addition to earthquake information, material for press, etc. precisely explaining the seismic activity after events. Many seismological terms, for example "source mechanism", are used in these materials. So even if the information is transmitted into disaster prevention organizations, it is considerably difficult to be understood. The objective of this study is to abstract seismological term which is easy for workers of these organizations to understand, from many seismological terms used in these materials. A questionnaire survey was undertaken to investigate "understandability" of 32 seismological terms for workers of administrations, police stations and educational institutions. The survey shows that among the 32 seismological terms, only 5 of them had "understandability" higher than 80%.
