A Simple Transform Equation of Questionnaire Intensity to JMA Intensity

Abstract

The seismic intensity determination by means of the questionnaire method has long been conducted for most significant earthquakes in Japan. However, there was no chance to examine if it is applicable even in high intensity range as VI and VII on the JMA scale until the 1995 Hyogoken-nanbu (Kobe) earthquake. Using significant amount of data for this earthquake we developed a new algorithm by which the existing questionnaire method can be effective at any intensities. On the course of the study a simple transform equation of questionnaire intensity to JMA intensity was derived. This equation is found useful especially in high intensity range over V on the JMA scale.
