Abstract
It has been geologically supposed that the Ise-Bay fault is located on the sea floor in Ise Bay, central Japan. On the basis of a brief review of recent multichannel and single-channel soundings, the Ise-Bay fault is found to extend south-southeastward from the mouth of the Kiso-sansen River to the Utsumi fault off the Chita peninsula. Since a NNW-SSE-trending submarine canyon passes through the mouth of the bay, a hypothetical Ise-Bay-Mouth fault possibly exists along the submarine canyon. On the other hand, three legends of submerged islands in and around Ise Bay have been passed down from generation to generation. The contents of the legends suggest that the submergence of the islands is attributed to three earthquakes whose epicenters are located in and around Ise Bay. It is likely that these earthquakes were generated by movements of the Ise-Bay and Isc-Bay-Mouth faults, dating back to 862 A.D., 1578 A.D., and 1586 A.D.
