Preliminary Report on the Kocaeli Earthquake, Turkey, of 17 August 1999
文部省1999年トルコ・コジャェリ地震調査団*
Abstract
In the early morning of 17 August 1999, a devastating earthquake with Magnitude 7.4 in Richter scale occurred beneath the Izmit City of Kocaeli Province of Turkey. The damage to Turkey was large in terms of both casualty and economy. It has been realized that seven large earthquakes had occurred successively along the North Anatolian Fault in this century since 1939, the epicenters migrating westward. In this sense, it is said that the occurrence of the Kocaeli earthquake was forecasted. The Monbu-sho, the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture in Japan, dispatched a survey team for investigating the earthquake disaster and for learning lessons from the disaster. This is a preliminary report of the site investigation results obtained by the reconnaissance team. The detail information will be compiled in the final report.
